Huawei E220 – 7.2Mbps firmware update

IMPORTANT: please see this post for the latest version of the E220 firmware: http://www.mobilebroadbandrocks.com/e220-72mbps-firmware-version-11117100200

I’ve just got my mits on the latest firmware for the Huawei E220. This update upgrades the modem to download at speeds up to 7.2Mbps – compared to the standard 3.6Mbps. I’ve just installed it and run a speed test in a 7.2Mbps area and I’m getting average speeds of around 2.5Mbps, peaking at 4.3Mbps (see the NetPerSec screenshot). The lack of receive diversity on the device will prevent it from hitting speeds much higher than this.

E220 7.2Mbps

This firmware isn’t an official release from Vodafone, so don’t expect any support from them… The usual disclaimers apply here – if you want to install the update do so at your own risk…..

Panic over! I uninstalled and then reinstalled Mobile Connect and set up the device again. I ran the 7.2Mbps firmware update (leaving the Forced Download box blank) and it worked.

You do not need to upgrade, as i know, if you can use E272 normally, there is not necessary to upgrade, because the faster speed will not appear after you upgrade it.

Hi there,

I made a tutorial about unlocking your E220 card. You will be directed how to get the unlock code in the EFS of your card. Maybe it will work with other model, not tested though. The code in the picture was tested with a T-Mobile E220 with network locked. Leave your comment there either you successfully unlock it or not.

I hope you find this usefull.

Sep 5, 2008 23:52

thanks a lot hoto
the procedure to unlock E220 manually worked for me with an SFR E220 (French Vodafone)

However, the offset was not the same as you with my firmware 11.115.

I searched on hex 5364 and found the unlock key (8 numbers). don’t remember the offset.
I used the SFR desimockage tool which is probabbly the same as your from here
http://www.sfrentreprises.fr/elements/documents/espace-utilisateur/global_access/Huawei_E220.zip

You had to use Mobile Partner to use another ISP bcse VMCLite seems to be Vodafone locked.

Great !!

ENGLISH below:
Sergei, maybe you won’t need 11.117.10.02.00.B268.
Download the firmware on the top of the page – look at the end of the starting post.
The version there is 11.117.09.00.00, but it works perfectly. I already updated and works top class. I am posting this through the updated modem :-)
The connection has improved. There is no change on the modem window, but the web pages now load faster.
Pleaase excuse any mistakes in my Russian language, as this is not my native language.

And to everyone with Three.co.uk contract in the UK , this firmware on the top of the page (11.117.09.00.00) works perfectly for me. Just for information how to upgrade step by step, but remember I accept no liability, as what worked for me ,might not work for you.
Tested on Win XP.
1. Make sure you have your PC and modem turned off for a while, because usually the modem gets hot if you use it, so let it cool well before you start the update.
2. Take the SIM card out of the modem, then start the PC.
3. Start the 3 connection manager, it will complain that there is no SIM, and the “Connect” button will be greyed. Close theconnection manager window – CLOSE, do NOT just minimize. It will pop up with a messa ge whether you really want to close it, click yes.
4. Start the firmware update program and follow the instructions.
5. Wait a minute before you press “Finish” when the updating ends.
6. Turn off the PC. Insert the SIM card back in the modem.
7. Do not forget to insert the SIM card in the modem !
8. Start the PC. The version of the firmware listed in the connection manager window should say 11.117.09.00.00
Enjoy

I am wondering about these reciprocal posts that written down in here because some says it works well and some says it doesn’t work well ,what are the manning of these things .?? I have just downloaded and ready to installed this “firmware 11.117.09″ on my PC but now I’ve scared to install it on my PC because most of one got serious troubles with it and one of a guy got an error after Installed it in few days .!!!!

SO WHAT I HAVE DONE NOW .?? Can anyone here who can guarantee is it really works with Vodafone E220 USB Modem ,because I really want to speed up my download speed, most of times I got EDGE or 3G in some days I got GPRS not HSDPA so now I worry about this speed, most of one in here said they got better speed after this Installed .

when Vodafone Mobile Connection Software Indicates the connection is HSDPA then I got 1or 2 bar(s) (speed is 512/768Kbps) unless I got 3 or 4 bars when It connected as EDGE or GPRS but download speed is very slow.!!!!!!!!
I tried to connect with network by using “Huawei Mobile Partner”
but the result is same as previous not indicating any increasing of download speed

if you can really help me then please send me an Email to my address because I am not going to install it on my PC with a RISK

Thanks

Hi!!!

I downloaded to my unlocked e220.

The only problem is me e220 won’t pick up 3g signal…??

I put the sim into my phone and it picks it up fine, but the e220 will only pick up gprs which is incredibly slow, it’s an orange sim and they claim to have the best coverage in my area and acording to their website it should be excellent??

Anyone know why my e220 can’t pick it up???

I am using mobile connect

there’s a mobile update for huawei e220 firmware… im using it right now… its 11.117.10.03.99
it’s fast.. there’s also a mobile partner that i use which maxis broadband company in there website delete it because of some technical issues.. the mobile partner 11.030.01.10.99

that is the latest as of now… the mobile partner software in maxis broadband has a wan status when you go to Tools -> Diagnostics -> WCDMA tab which has the info of firmware and the IMEI and -> Wan Status tab that has a complete info of the ip and dns server you connect and its network id which it connects and the signal db info to its cell ID..

both will help boost your internet connection and when you mixed it with TCP Optimizer it will increase technically about 10% of its speed…

great stuff huh.. email me if you want the files.

Thanks, UK here on 3 and upgraded to 11.117.09. following the above and it now reports 7.2Mb so this works.

I had previously unlocked my E22o for free using the instructions and software here http://unlocke220.com/

I put in my orange PAGY sim and I can connect over GPRS (slowly) but it works. Use the access bundle to cap at £1 per day though.

Here is the latest firmware available (11.117.10.03.99) @ http://rapidshare.de/files/47569770/E220_11.117.10.03.99_Firmware.exe.html
& the latest dashboard available (UTPS11.030.01.03.297) @ http://rapidshare.de/files/47569676/UTPS11.030.01.03.297_MAC11.202.08.01.297.exe.html

The dashboard is to work with Dialog GSM Sri Lanka. Doesn’t matter create your own service profile. It should work as normally as it is working in my Windows XP Pro system. The dashboard is much newer than the one that is available on Huawei.com

What will this flash of firmware do to my serial number and IMEI? Will this be preserved? Or will it wipe it? And also, will this remove branding from the software and drivers, that are stored on the device, that is installed when first plugged in?

Thanks,
Steven

Vodafone’s femtocell won’t improve mobile broadband

vodafone_femtocellVodafone UK have just announced the availability of thier new “3G coverage booster”, aka a 3G femtocell.  This little box of tricks plugs into your home broadband connection and routes calls over the internet and onto Voda’s network.  This is welcome news for those of us with 3G handsets who are unable to access data services or make reliable voice calls due to poor coverage.

However, it’s not great news for mobile broadband users.  Although it’s unclear if the femtocell supports higher speed technology (HSDPA), the fact that it routes the data over your ADSL connection should be enough reason to rule it out.  If you’ve got ADSL at home, why bother using your mobile broadband allowance when fixed line is far cheaper and faster?

Improving your mobile broadband coverage

Great post here from Farmers Weekly – not on my normal feed list but could be one to add…  A farmer in the UK has been struggling to get decent mobile broadband speeds from his three dongle so he’s stuck it on a tube and hoisted it 6 meters into the air!
