Huawei Modem Utilities

Here’s a couple of neat utilities for Huawei devices (E220\E270\E272\E172\E226\E800\E870) that you might find useful.

Switch Port

This tool will disable the on-board VMC Lite auto installer.  This is useful if you don’t want to use the embedded software on your machine.

Switch Modem

This package contains the drivers to allow you to use the device if you’re not using the standard connection manager.  You’ll need to plug in the device when you run this utility.

As a side note this Port Switcher utility also allows the E870 ExpressCard to be used in the Linksys router (WRT54G3G) although Linksys won’t support this officially.

Nice to know though.

Hmm, that would have been nice to know before splashing out on a billion adsl router.

This is going to be a long shot but what the hell…

Is there any chance anyone can share any information on the author, a website perhaps?

I have a Huawei USB modem that also features a MicroSD card slot. When I run the Switch Port program and use it, it ends up disabling that slot. I run it again and it then disables the fake cdrom partition. I run it yet again and the fake cdrom partition comes back. However, no amount of button pressing can get the MicroSD cart slot back =(

Please help =)

Hi,
No laughing here, just tears of joy for SwitchPort..
I’ve struggled for two days to get my T-Mobile E-220 working on my new install
of XPPro after fitting a new Hard Disk. It would announce itself, install all the
bits, and then hang at the CD-ROM stage, and then the machine would just
stop responding altogether.

SwitchPort has stopped all that, thanks very much for making it available.

the e160 can’t be upgraded to 7.2 mbps as its hardware isn’t compatible therefore no software / firmware is available to allow this

Vodafone’s femtocell won’t improve mobile broadband

vodafone_femtocellVodafone UK have just announced the availability of thier new “3G coverage booster”, aka a 3G femtocell.  This little box of tricks plugs into your home broadband connection and routes calls over the internet and onto Voda’s network.  This is welcome news for those of us with 3G handsets who are unable to access data services or make reliable voice calls due to poor coverage.

However, it’s not great news for mobile broadband users.  Although it’s unclear if the femtocell supports higher speed technology (HSDPA), the fact that it routes the data over your ADSL connection should be enough reason to rule it out.  If you’ve got ADSL at home, why bother using your mobile broadband allowance when fixed line is far cheaper and faster?

E220 7.2Mbps Firmware – version 11.117.10.02.00

Big thanks to the guy’s who pointed out that there’s a new firmware available for the E220.  Version 11.117.10.02 continues to bring 7.2Mbps support to the modem and is a recommended update for all users.

You can download the installer from M1’s website, or download a cached copy here.

Improving your mobile broadband coverage

mobile_broadband_speed_boost

Great post here from Farmers Weekly – not on my normal feed list but could be one to add…  A farmer in the UK has been struggling to get decent mobile broadband speeds from his three dongle so he’s stuck it on a tube and hoisted it 6 meters into the air!
