Huawei E220 (USB Modem) - Written by mbrocks.com on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 13:29 - 112 Comments

USB Modem / Huawei E220 on Vista. Finally.

UPDATE: please see this post for the latest Vista updates.

Well it looks like there’s finally a solution for Vista users who’ve been stranded without connectivity due to the incompatibility of the USB Modem (the VF branded Huawei E220). We’ve managed to get the required updates – the only caveat at this point is that you’ll need to run them on a non-vista machine, before then plugging your newly flashed device back into your vista box.

This fix is only for the 32bit edition of Vista, 64bit drivers are on the way…

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Find a Windows 2000 / XP machine. If you’ve plugged the USB modem into it before, go into control panel, then add remove & programs then de-install the Vodafone runtime components.
  2. Plug the USB Modem back into this machine. The EULA should pop up, click on cancel – this will stop the software loading.
  3. Now, you need to update the firmware – this will allow the device to be recognised by Windows Vista without it throwing a fit. Download this executable and run it.
  4. Almost there. Now it’s time to update the software / dashboard on the device to the latest version – this will also give you long-awaited SMS functionality. Download this executable and run it. When I ran it, it threw up an error message saying ‘firmware not response’ at the end of the update, but it still works ok.

That’s it! Your USB modem is now up to date with the latest firmware and software and can now be used with Windows Vista. You might want to do this even if you’re not running Vista as the latest software gives you SMS support, PIN support plus a few other fixes.

Have done exactly as instructions above. Even got the firmware update successful message. 3G USB Modem works fine on Windows XP. However, on Vista, it refuses to go any further than installing drivers after accepting EULA. Any ideas? Is there a way of installing the software through another way? Thanks in advance.

Does the progress bar pop up in the bottom right hand corner? How far does that get? Do the drivers install ok – i.e. is there any unknown hardware or does windows recognise it all?

May 3, 2007 9:48

I also suffered with ‘USB modem not found’. I fixed it by actually allowing the software to install completely from the ‘CD’ then not removing anything. A Google search earlier shows a posting where the device doesn’t install a USB Composite Device driver which is needed. Rather than go through the laborious process of doing that manually, I let the installer do it for me. I’ve now successfully updated the modem firmware and software. Thanks for this posting.

Thanks, technically it works (blinking purple led) but still no contact with Internet. It is possible to send SMS, but with the dashboard of my provider (KPN Netherlands) it still is not possible to get in touch with the web. Who can help, some settings wrong ?

fatcat
May 3, 2007 21:07

Hey Hans, when you connect the LED should come on constantly, rather than flashing. If you can’t get that far then check your APN settings.

Hans
May 3, 2007 21:15

OK, but do you know how the APN settings should look ? Thanks anyway for your reaction !

Howzit?… from Manny in Cape Town, SA

Thanks for this (fatcat?). My E220 now finally work thanks to your downloads and instructions.

My first instinct was to dump Norton, which I did, but the modem still didn’t work (no loss – I would have dumped Norton anway). The real issue was that Vodacom (the local service provider aligned to Vodafone) only posted the firmware upgrade for the E220 and NOT the software upgrade. Now THAT’S annoying. Give me all, or nothing. And as far as I can see it’s still not on their site (www.vodacom.co.za). Knobs!

Antonioni, keep plugging away at it (no pun intended). Else take it back to the vendor and get them to MAKE it work. That’s fair isn’t it?

fatcat
May 23, 2007 9:45

No worries Manny, glad to hear you’re back online…

Antonioni – it sounds like you’ve done the hardest part – getting it to be recognised on vista. I’d suggest that you check your network and APN settings in the software – try the link to APN settings that I posted earlier.

Hi guys,

I have done exactly as instructed to at the top of the page (the information regarding the update of my modem), and everything works with regards to Vista picking the modem up and actually running the VMC software.

The problem I am now experiencing is when I try to connect to our “Vodacom SA 3G” network, I get a message stating the following: “You must be connected to the Vodafone network to make a data connection.”

Any input on this would be appreciated.

Regards,
Sebastien

I downloaded all the upgrades from http://www.mobileconnected.co.uk/2007/05/25/usb-modem-huawei-e220-on-vista-take-2/#comment-41

but why does my pc still view the modem as a cd drive? it also takes long to startup. i usually go into my computer and run it from there.

fatcat
Jun 10, 2007 18:13

That’s the way the plug and play feature works on the USB modem. It’s recognised by windows as both a mass storage device / cd drive, plus also a modem. The ‘virtual’ CD drive contains all the software required – i.e. the device drivers and the dashboard.

Hi everyone. I have the E220 on the Irish Three Network. I am running XP on my machine and am running into the same problems as those that have vista, ie. only recognised as mass storage device. I can’t access the virtual cd drive as the whole system freezes when the modem is connected. It only frees up once I unplug the modem, so I can’t access the software on the modem itself. I was hoping this little modem would be the answer to my dial-up hell but I’m wondering if the frustration is worth it!! Any help would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks in advance.

HI all ,

Glad to see I am not the only one with problems. I’m on Vodafone Ireland.

Got all the updates and did everything as above on anew Vista Laptop. Everything seemed to go ok until I tried to connect. Getting the same message as Sebastian.

“You must be connected to the Vodafone network to make a data connection.”

When I plugged back into my old PC under Windows 2000 everything worked as normal!!!!

Any ideas? Is it anything to do with the built modem that came with the laptop?

One more for the people who may still be struggling. I have wasted days with a Sony Viao TZ on the UK Vodafone network. After following the Vodafone upgrade process without success multiple times (symptoms: not finding the CD to load the software slowing the PC down a lot, flashing up the install every now and then but it disappearing before it could start and multiple re-loads of the device manager with the new processes disappearing and re-appearing until I get sick of it) I tried following the walk through on Youtube. Net result was not much better either but it did give me insight into what I needed to do.
Steps:
1. Follow the Vodafone process to upgrade it to Vista Compatibility
2. Copy off the content of the upgraded CD content from the modem to the Vista PC.
2. Insert the modem and run the VMC_PBStarter.exe by hand.
3. It may not appear to install properly but check to see if it creates files under your program group and see if it starts recognising drivers.
4. Follow the process to convert the USB Mass Storage Device to a USB Composite Device (Youtube).
5. If you are successful you will now have a compsite device & mass storage device, a Modem, A CD and a port.
Note: Where I was stuck is that the CD continued to be enable / disappear such that I could not run the client software.
7. I eventually disabled the CD device and hey presto..
I can now run the client software (VMC_PBStarter.exe) now from my hard drive and the modem works.
Not a complete fix but after this much time loss.. I am happy.. Hope it helps!!

Hi,

I have followed all the steps and everytihng goes according to the instructions.

But…when plug the modem into my vista machine it asks me if I want to execute the VMClite.exe and when I click on ok it goes into a loop…

1. Installing software dialogue box begins showing ‘progress’,

2. Install wizard begins but upon starting up tells me there is already an instance of this program running. Please wait until it is completed to try again.

3. Depsite no interference from me, the Installing software box continues to show progress and the Install wizard continues to pop up more and more windows, telling me over and over that ‘there is already an instance of this programme running, Please wait until it is completed to try again.

I have also tried to close all the pop up windows and have won :-) only to double click on the (seemingly) installed vodafone icon to just get the error ‘failed to connect, please check the wireless device or the setting of the network connection’ :-(

Oh please can someone help!!!!!

I am doing the steps from a XPmachine that has been happily playing with the modem for the past 6 months and my new Vista machine is 32 bit…

Thank you

i carried out the above instruction carefully, and what happen was the modemn is still working with 3g but not on VISTA. all the data inside the read-only memory was change with the vodafone Lite. and my problem now is how to white back the original files which i have backed-up before hand. it annoying because everytime I start my comp, the EULA will starts itself and i should be very carefull to click DECLINED so that i can connect with the 3 network. anybody can help me on how to delete the vodafone lite in it? or to flash back the original files and drivers which I have backed-up before hand?

I’ve just got my new 3-mobile data modem.. and sure enough it does not work with Windows Vista.

I read you post, and through yeh that’s what I need, and downloaded the upgraded and it all worked well until..

I tried to connect.. and the locked-down Vodofone specific version has converted my 3-modile modem into a vodafone modem, and will not now let me connect to the 3-network.

Is there a way to get the 3-mobile branded version?

Hi everyone,

I purchased my 3G HSDPA modem only 4 days ago. I run on Windows xp, and connects to Vodacom (South Africa). If I insert the modem in the USB Slot the coputer installs the HARDWARE and indicates that it is in working fine. The system doesn’t start with the automatic software installation. And from there on the pc freezes up. As soon as I unplug the modem it unfreezes. Please help I don’t know what to do.

I upgraded firmware and software a couple of months backk for use of the modem on vista. Every week the damn thing spits out a runtime error ‘7′. Out of memory. My laptop has over a gig ram. The only thing I can think of being out of memeroy is the dodgy vodafone modem. Once the error has popped up the GUI will no longer diaplay and after removing it and restarting it wont create the virtual drive at all.

Everytime this happens I end up having to reformat the laptop. Uninstalling software and removing all reg entries doesn’t help.

Is there any solution for this as Vodacom South Africa have no clue what to do. At this rate I will end up invoicing them for my time spent as a technician fixing problems caused by thier dodgy software and hardware. As I am typing this the modem has spat out the same error. I want to tear it from the usb port and throw it at the nearest vodacom shop i find.

Hi All ,

Kieron …. Sorry did not see your reply ….. Did you get every thing sorted?

Got a connection now and getting HSPDA …..

Right now for the silly bit. I am getting some download speeds of 35/40 K/sec ….. Normally only getting about 8/16 K/sec …. I am still confused by the different ratings for download speeds kbs / K/s etc …. What should my K/sec kbs be?

Anyone know any software that I download for my sidebar that will give me my current and average download speeds …. Only asking on here because it would be interesting to find out what Voda IRL users are getting.

When it works its great but I’m not sure what sure what Voda download should be against what we are getting …. Lets start shouting because my wife is alongside me on O2 and battering my speed constantly ….

In Malaysia, are you using the device with a SIM card from a local carrier or with the original SIM from SmarTone-Vodafone in Hong Kong? I think you’ll find that SmarTone-Vodafone lock the E220 to their own SIM card so you can’t use another carrier’s SIM in it.

Folks after 2 hard days trying to get the E220 to work on vista I have solved the problem which I thought I should share the solution withfellow strugglers. After installing the take installation I had a request for APN and then password on another menu which stated it required user name then password and then another further message you must be on a vodaphone net work this was frustrating because I was. I spoke to yes communications in manchester and this is how I solved it. Although I am an administrator on my machine. Do the following and the E220 will work

1. enter control panel
2. open user accounts
3. check to see if you are the administrator
4. look for the box turn user control on/off
5. uncheck (uac)user control account)
6. restart computer reinstall from start
7. product will now run as it should

To unlock the E220 you can use a program called “KK_MClient.exe” which you can find in the net. Then go to site Kulankendi.com and pay for 15 credits (15 Euros). Send them an email and ask for login and password details. Open the program connect Huawei modem (do not forget to remove sim card) and it will unlock it in about 15 seconds. Works great. You can also get the Firmware and Dashboard upgrades from their site, although there are later versions on other sites. The Firmware upgrade will boost the modem to 7.2 Mbps.

Completed mine today and am using it now, works great on PC or Mac. If you’re using OSx10.5 download programme “Huawei_DataCard_Drv_App_Intel.pkg” and use this to connect.

My problem is on one of my XP-clients the modem works just fine.
When the user plugs the Dell D420 laptop into a Docking Station and then plugs the modem into that, XP crashes, really hard. No Blue Screen, just freezes.

Tried another computer, same brand and model, works fine.

Even tried Hot Swap, w/o using “safe remove” works fine.

ewusbmdm.sys/2.0.3.0. and I got a Virtual CD/DVD, a modem and a comm-port every time I connect it/plug it in.

Haven’t tried so much on the problem setup, been working with reference setup, no problem.

Anyone seen this before?

hin nimah…

Frst check and see
if the modem flashing green or blue..

green—> no network or sim card not set properly..

blue—-> good and proceed further…..

if u have service Pack 1 or 2 installed for ur XP, if less than 2 i dont think the E220 is compatble…

if SP2 and E220 not getting detected…

check the drivers..
ie through

right click on my computer—>properties—–>hardware——> device manager…

there are 4 Huwaei drivers..

1. under dvc/cd rom drives’
2. under modems
3. under ports
4. under universal bus controller

if any of the drivers are missing or showing a yellow/red exclamation mark then its time u install the drivers manually(check with ur service provider tech team if unsure)

if all drivers present then create a dialup connection( which again u will need to get in touch with ur service provider as u need the tel no… and the APN no…for ur service provider)…

check if this helps

if not mail me at
jatin_somal@yahoo.com or reply back through the forum

Use another machine xp/2000, copy all the files into a folder on a memory stick from the modem dongle. Now copy this to your c: drive on the vista machine from your memory stick. Plug in the dongle, it will ask for the driver, point it at the vista driver folder inside the one you just copied to your vista machine. It will now install the driver. Next go into the folder you just copied to your c: drive and run the autorun, this will install the software needed to connect. It will put the shortcut on your desktop and Bob’s your uncle, you are ready to connect. No downloading other drivers, no firmware updates, just simple.

I installed one of these devices a couple of days ago with Hutchison Communications (3) as the provider. My Dell Latitude computer is running XP as the O/S. It worked well until I went to use it this morning when it says “Failed to open data file.” The only thing that has changed is that my XP O/S did an update last night. Any ideas?

My family has 2 laptops, one in XP and one in Vista. Since the ISP could not provide broadband service in our area, I have to use a wireless broadband alternative and I got the E220.

I always had a problem with using the E220 in the laptop with Vista but no problems with using it in the XP laptop. I upgraded the E220 firmware and most of the problems disappeared.

A useful tip would be to always use the same USB ports for the Assistant Power and the main cable each time.

Perhaps, an even useful tip (in case anyone is interested) is that I solved my problem of just having 1 laptop access the Internet each time. I purchased a Dlink DIR-451, plugged in the E220 there, set up the config and the wireless, and voila, I know have two laptops on wireless accessing the Internet. No more problems of having to plug the E220 modem on the Vista laptop! :-)

Bought a Vista laptop and upgraded my Device as per the vodafone website. The device appeared to be working on my new vista laptop however after a days worth of use the device now crashes my laptop completely. Have tried numerous ways it appears that the device will work on XP but on putting it into a vista laptop it crashes the laptop immediately once it recognises it and goes to the blue screen of death, vodafone not too helpful on the matter any help would be appreciated

Dear all,

I solve the problem “E220 Error 31: A device attached to the system is not functioning. “, during dial on windows vista.
Steps:
1 – remove the drivers and software of device using add-remove programs.
2 – download and execute rarepair.exe tool (download via rapidshare bellow) and execute

http://rs82.rapidshare.com/files/140581179/rarepair.exe

This tool repair the windows components responsibles to dial conections.
The firmware of modem are uptodate do most recently version.

Hi.

I have a USB HUAWEI E220 bought in the UK from a 3 store. I used it for a while in the UK with a 3 sim card but have now moved to South Africa. I tried using a Vodacom sim but for some reason (although the sim works in vodafone USB modems) the modem is detected by the vodafone mobile connect, but it keeps telling me to insert sim.

are the modems locked to a specific network?

how do i use my vodacom sim in my usb modem?

Thanks for any help.

Thanks for all these comments. My problem is using a 220 with a Win2000 laptop (an HP Omnibook) in Jakarta. It all worked (after the couple of hours fiddling with the CD drive indentification) but on registration on the webpage I got a fault, then an Error 619: Specified port cannot be found and sience then it’s dead.

Can anyone post a working port setting ? i.e. should both the modem device and the new Port be both COM4, or should they be COM4 and COM5 ? Any other port settings would be helpful too…

Thanks
Philip

Vodafone’s femtocell won’t improve mobile broadband

vodafone_femtocellVodafone UK have just announced the availability of thier new “3G coverage booster”, aka a 3G femtocell.  This little box of tricks plugs into your home broadband connection and routes calls over the internet and onto Voda’s network.  This is welcome news for those of us with 3G handsets who are unable to access data services or make reliable voice calls due to poor coverage.

However, it’s not great news for mobile broadband users.  Although it’s unclear if the femtocell supports higher speed technology (HSDPA), the fact that it routes the data over your ADSL connection should be enough reason to rule it out.  If you’ve got ADSL at home, why bother using your mobile broadband allowance when fixed line is far cheaper and faster?

Big thanks to the guy’s who pointed out that there’s a new firmware available for the E220.  Version 11.117.10.02 continues to bring 7.2Mbps support to the modem and is a recommended update for all users.

You can download the installer from M1’s website, or download a cached copy here.

Improving your mobile broadband coverage

mobile_broadband_speed_boost

Great post here from Farmers Weekly – not on my normal feed list but could be one to add…  A farmer in the UK has been struggling to get decent mobile broadband speeds from his three dongle so he’s stuck it on a tube and hoisted it 6 meters into the air!
